The 6th Asia Open Source Software Symposium

Hosted by Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC), Japan and co-hosted by the Information and Communication Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) , the 6th Asia Open Source Software Symposium (Asia OSS Symposium) was held during the 1st "National Free and Open Source Software Week 2005" in September 6-8, 2005 at the Hotel Trans Asia, Colombo.

The 6th Asia OSS Symposium, taking place from September 6-8, 2005, became one of the events of the first FOSS week to be conducted in Sri Lanka. The week spanning September 5-10, 2005 was declared the " Sri Lanka Free and Open Source Convention" by the cabinet of the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL). The week had been designed to culminate on the 10th of September 2005, which was the Software freedom day for this year, with a massive open source advocacy programme to the general pubic. Other events surrounding the week were the CXO conference (September 7) targeting CIO/CTO/CEO of government and private sectors; a Codefest (September 6-7) a two day code-a-thon aiming to develop local language applications; a School and University Advocacy programme (September 5) and the FOSSSL '05 conference (September 8-9) an international conference/tutorials with a theme on LAMP development (for more information on and registration for other events taking place during the FOSSL Convention please visit FOSSL Convension Web Page)

Also, The Asia CodeFest was held on September 6-7 in Colombo. This was a marathorn coding event which software developers gathered together for 32 hours non-stop working towards common goals. This was a great chance for actual open source practitioners in Asia to meet up and collaborate.
