The 7th Asia Open Source Software Symposium
Theme: “Towards Asia Open Source Software Ecosystem for Sustainable Development”
An event hosted by Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC), Japan and co-hosted by MIMOS Berhad, Malaysia.
Open Source Ecosystem
The Open Source Ecosystem is defined as a continuous cycle of interactions, collaborations and sharing of open source knowledge among various organizations such as government, private, academic, public and commercial sectors working with open source software. The governmental and academic research communities conduct fundamental research under an open-source model; private-sector developers build upon this research to develop viable commercial prodcuts; and then the private sector provides tax revenue and philanthropic contributions that fund additional research by the government and academia. The growing adoption of open source software has created an urgent need for skills and knowledge in the software ecosystem. Thus, the establishment of the Asian Open Source Ecosystem can be undertaken through OSS Capacity and Capability Building and OSS Community Development.
Objectives
- To initiate the development of an Asian Open Source Ecosystem and a shared platform to promote and accelerate the development of open source application
- To identify and assess on-going research and development initiatives on OSS among Asian countries, particularly those embarked on digital divide programmes
- To benchmark and learn from international experiences on the OSS success stories in each country
- To improve the chance to gain an additional mileage in terms of collaboration with CICC, with the potential of further collaboration with the other member countries in the OSS activities.
