Theme

UTILIZATION OF OSS [To Close the Digital Divide and Presage Its Economic Impacts].
We explored the Open Source System (OSS) Utilization, particularly focusing on the digital gap to be closed and presage its economic impact. On the ground of the 7th AOSS Symposium theme, "Towards Asian Open Source Ecosystem - for sustainable development of OSS", we sought how the "Ecosystem" concretely worked.


Objectives

  • To close the Digital Gap and accelerate OSS industry in order to bring economic impacts by utilizing Open Source system
  • To identify and assess on-going research and development initiatives on OSS among Asia region (Economies members of AOSS)
  • To benchmark and learn from international experiences on the OSS success stories in each country
  • To improve the chance to gain an additional mileage in terms of collaboration with CICC, with the potential of further collaboration with the other member countries in the OSS activities.

Programs

The programs of 8th AOSS were composed of:
  1. CodeFest: 2 full-day program, Feb. 11th-12th, 2007, at ITB Campus, Bandung
  2. OSS Awareness Session: A half day session mainly for Indonesian locals. Feb. 12th, 2007, Inna Putri Bali Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali
  3. Localization Workshop: A half day session for invited participants. Feb. 12th, 2007, at Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali
  4. Asia OSS Symposium: 2.5 full-day main program. Feb. 13th-15th, 2007, at Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali
  5. Exhibition: A continuous event (in parallel with the symposium). Feb. 13th-15th, 2007, at Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali

 

Summary

The 8th Asia OSS Symposium was held  at Indonesia, where government pushes OSS with the policy "IGOS (Indonesia Goes Open Source)".

Under the theme "UTILIZATION OF OSS -To close the Digital Gap, and Presage Its Economic Impacts-", 130 people participated not only from 20 Asian economies but also from USA and Australia.

This event was hosted by CICC, and co-hosted by State Ministry of Research and Technology (Ristek),Department of Communication and Information Technology(Depkominfo), Institute Technology Bandung (ITB), The Institution of Engineers, Indonesia (PII). Also there were sponsorship companies, namely NEC, AsiaNux, HP, Divusi, as well as supporter companies.

 On the first day, this event was opened with the address, Honarable Mr. I Nyoman Yasa, M. Si, The Governor of BALI, Indonesia, His Excellency, Mr. Kusmayanto Kadiman, The Minister for Research and Technology, Indonesia, Mr. Katsuhiko Kaji, Director of the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, and Mr. Akio KANAYA, Executive Director of CICC, Japan etc.

On the last day, Bali Declaration was agreed with the direction of next stage in the future, under the name of 20 participant economies.
